Effective Natural Treatments for Pets

Our pets, just like us, are affected by poor nutrition, stress and unhealthy diets. And, just like us, many pet health issues can be helped if they live a healthier lifestyle.

Annual vaccinations and commercial pets foods are the main contributing factor to our pets chronic illnesses today along with overuse of antibiotics.

While conventional medicine is needed, many veterinarians are starting to incorporate alternatives and use holistic methods, and look at a pets illness from many sides including diet, emotional stresses, and behaviors.

Dogs and cats have an uncanny ability to seek out and eat medicinal herbs in the wild making use of natural resources for their health. We finally realize that nature very often does have the answers.

Did you know that cats and dogs will get a UTI infection at some point in their life?  Read the following article to find out how diet alone can be the cause.

The Truth About Cat Food for Urinary Tract Health

You've probably heard it a hundred times in the past when you would go to the veterinarian, dry food is best, it controlled weight and helped keep the cats teeth clean.  Dry food may help with cleaner teeth, but free feeding of dry food is leading to obesity and other diseases.  It is not just the quantity of dry food, it is the quality. We are feeding our cats food which they really were not meant to eat.
Dry food can cause dehydration and adding a small amount of water to the dry food can help with hydration levels but the best cat food for urinary tract health are diets high in moisture and are not fish based, but meat based.  If your cat loves his dry food which is only about 10 percent moisture, try mixing a moist canned or packet food and gradually increase the moist food until he eating a mostly a canned food diet.

Cats need a natural raw diet of meat, bones and organs (originally this was a mouse or small rodents). Cats crave meat so adding raw meat or changing to a raw food diet would be an ideal cat food for urinary tract health. A healthy diet for the owner of the cat would include grains and vegetables but cats are carnivores and are not meant to eat vegetables, cereal and grain fillers. They are meant to eat meat, bone, organs, along with the fiber, minerals and vitamins, all of which is in the perfect food of a mouse. This is impractical for a domesti-cated house cat, so commercial products were made.

Now it is thought that the pH balance of urine is the cause of urinary problems, so pet food manufacturers wanting to sell their products have come up with all sorts of additives to prevent urinary problems. The manufacturers of urinary tract health cat food are putting urine acidifiers in the food which can cause metabolic acidosis, resulting in impaired kidney function and a loss of potassium which leads to mineral imbalance. This type of prevention only leads to problems of another sort.

The best urinary tract health cat food would be a diet with raw foods or canned, because although a cat eating only dry food does drink a bit more water than a cat on a canned or raw diet it is still only half of the water compared to a cat eating canned foods. When a cat is only eating dry food the urine becomes very concentrated which can contribute to feline urinary tract associated illnesses.

Cat food for urinary tract health includes raw or canned food, and adding natural immune builders to support a healthy immune function and an overall balance to keep our pets healthy for years to come.

Facts You Should Know About Canine Struvite Crystals

Symptoms that can occur with dog struvite crystals and bladder stones consist of;

1.  Straining to urinate

2.  Urinating only a few drops at a time

3.  Frequent urination

4.  Blood in the urine

5.  Dribbling urine

6.  Loss of appetite

7.  Depression

8.  Sporadic vomiting

If your dog has any of these symptoms, it is essential to take him to the veterinarian immediately. A urinalysis and culture will indicate if there is an infection and antibiotic treatment will be prescribed.  If stones or crystals are present they can be removed surgically or dissolved by the use of diet.  Struvite crystals are common in normal urine and are usually of no significance.  When the crystals are present in large amounts, they can form stones or a blockage.

The canine struvite crystals form in the urinary bladder as a result of dietary influences and genetics.  The crystals can be various sizes and amounts resulting in infection. Stones can form in any part of the urinary tract in dogs.  There are several types of stones but struvite and calcium oxalate stones are without a doubt the most common. It is imperative to treat bladder stones so that the urinary tract obstruction does not occur.

Bladder stones can be removed surgically by a cystotomy, which requires opening the bladder. Surgical removal is the fastest, but this is an invasive method and has its risks.  If the stones are small enough to pass in the urine the vet will perform a nonsurgical procedure called urohydropropulsion.  This procedure is performed under sedation by filling the bladder with saline through a catheter, holding the dog vertically, and squeezing the bladder to expel the stones through the urethra. Stones lodged in the urethra can often be flushed into the bladder and removed, but sometimes an urethrotomy, which is a surgical incision into the urethra, is done especially for the relief of a stricture.

Canine struvite crystals can be dissolved using dietary modifications and/or medications.  Water intake must be increased so the urine is diluted which helps thin out the crystals in the urine.

You might also want to consider adding products that support the function of the bladder and urinary tract to help prevent dog struvite crystals.  A homeopathic veterinarian may prescribe uva ursi, berberis, cantharis, staphysagris or a combination of the herbs and botanical extracts. All of these are well known tonics for treating and preventing urinary tract infections.

Echinacea, Indian ginseng, milk thistle and dandelion are herbs known to support healthy liver and immune system function which will aid the urinary tract system to remain healthy.

The easiest way to prevent canine struvite crystals is to give your dog a healthy diet and add an alternative bladder support product which also aids in helping kidney function.
