Natural Herbal Alternative Remedies &
Treatments for Lowering Cholesterol

Cholesto-Rite:  Like high blood pressure and high blood sugar levels, high levels of LDL cholesterol are recognized as symptoms of imbalance in the system. Naturopaths recognize that the whole system and not just the symptoms should be treated.

Research has demonstrated that a combination of natural remedies, regular exercise and dietary changes can make a significant difference to LDL levels and reduce or even eliminate the need for prescription drugs.

Diseases associated with high cholesterol (and fats) are the number one killer. Fats also play a key role in the incidence of cancers and many other degenerative diseases. Cholesterol exists only in animal tissues, therefore, one's diet is an important first step in its control. For some people, however, limiting fat and cholesterol intake alone is not enough to reduce serum cholesterol to safe levels because of their own liver's production of excess cholesterol. The use of supplements to augment dietary modification can help reduce cholesterol without the side effects of many drugs.

The effectiveness of any cholesterol-reduction therapy varies considerably between individuals. The nutrients we recommend have not only been shown to lower cholesterol, but also protect against cardiovascular disease by other mechanisms such as inhibition of cholesterol-oxidizing free radicals and abnormal blood clots inside arteries (thrombosis).

The following nutritional supplements offer synergistic benefits to assist dietary modification to reduce total serum cholesterol and elevate HDL cholesterol:

POLICOSANOLPolicosanol is a natural supplement derived from sugar cane. It is a mixture of eight higher primary aliphatic alcohols isolated and purified from sugar cane wax., take one tablet twice per day with meals: one in the afternoon and one in the evening. Or SYTRINOLsafe, effective, and convenient way to help maintain a healthy cholesterol level, one capsule twice daily. Note: Do not take if it causes your cholesterol to drop below 180 mg/dL

FIBERfiber food capsules from life extension, 4 to 6 grams before any high-fat meal.

CHITOSANchitosan for lowering cholesterol levels, three to six 500-mg chitosan capsules and one 1000 mg ascorbic acid capsule right before a high-fat meal.

NIACINniacin for lowering cholesterol, 1500 to 3000 mg a day (if tolerable). Consider flush-free niacin (inositol hexanicotinate) to avoid a "red face."

ARTICHOKE EXTRACTartichoke extract for lowering cholesterol,  300 mg, 3 times a day.

GARLICgarlic for lowering cholesterol, 600 to 48000 mg a day.

CURCUMIN, curcumin to lower cholesterol900 to 1800 mg a day.

Gugulipid, 140 mg 1 to 2 times a day.

GREEN TEA EXTRACT, green tea extract for cholesterol750 mg a day of green tea, 93% polyphenol extract.

PERILLA OILperilla oil, 6000 mg a day. We suggest taking six 1000-mg gel caps daily. If triglycerides are high, consider taking 4-8 softgels of fish oil (EPA/DHA).

Vitamin E, vitamin e for cholesterol400 to 800 IU daily

SOY PROTEIN EXTRACT, soy protein for lowering cholesterol2 heaping teaspoons (5 to 6 grams) of soy powder daily. Soy powder can be easily dispersed and has a light peanut butter taste. For those who want to avoid powders, consider taking one-five capsules of the Ultra Soy Extract (40% isoflavones) daily.

SELENIUM, selenium to control cholesterol 200 to 600 mcg daily.

HERBAL CARDIOVASCULAR FORMULAherbal cardiovascular formul for controlling cholesterol, two-six capsules daily with food in divided doses.

Caution: Anyone who is seeking to use dietary supplements to lower high cholesterol must verify efficacy by having a cholesterol blood test 45 to 60 days after initiating a nutritional regimen. If supplements fail to work, cholesterol-lowering drugs should be considered. While blood testing is not mandatory for healthy people seeking to reduce their risk of heart attack or stroke, it is recommended that everyone have an annual blood test to establish a benchmark giving you the ability to monitor and optimize your life extension program.

Cinnamon for high cholesterol
(June 2004)

Adding a dash of cinnamon to coffee, cereal, or toast may help control blood sugar and cholesterol, according to a December 2003 study.

Researchers at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in Maryland teamed with Pakistani researchers to compare cinnamon capsules with placebo pills in 60 people with the most common type of diabetes. After 40 days, those taking cinnamon reduced their blood sugar and triglycerides (a fat in the blood) by an average of about 25 percent and their “bad” LDL cholesterol by nearly 20 percent compared with the control group. Earlier research had shown that an ingredient in cinnamon—found in powdered and capsule forms but not in oils—increases cells’ sensitivity to insulin, which regulates the metabolism of sugar and fat and thus helps control the LDL level.

Because a small dose worked as effectively as larger ones, the researchers say that you need to consume only 1 gram (slightly less than half a teaspoon) or possibly less to reap the benefits. And you probably don’t need to eat it every day: The improvements lasted up to three weeks after people stopped taking it.

Citric Fruits - A Healthy Food
By John Roberts

New studies suggested once again that citric fruits including oranges, tangerines, and grapefruits help fight cancer, high cholesterol, and obesity.

Studies both at Texas A&M University and Kanazawa Medical University in Japan showed that compounds in citric fruits can help reduce the risk of colon cancer. Researchers at Texas A&M University found that freeze-dried grapefruit, similar to the whole grapefruit, can reduce the incidence of early colon cancer lesions in animals. The Japanese researchers found anti-colon cancer properties in nobiletin - a compound found in tangerines.

Grapefruit can also reduce the risk of cancer caused by smoking. A study on the cancer prevention was done by the researchers at the University of Hawaii. The researchers found that drinking 6 ounces of grapefruit juice a day reduces the activity of a liver enzyme that is thought to activate toxic chemicals in the smoke.

On another front, scientists from the USDA and a Canadian company isolated a compound - polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) - from orange and tangerine peels that can actually lower cholesterol in animals. They found that use of food containing 1% PMFs can lower cholesterol by 32 to 40%.

Grapefruits also promote weight loss. Researchers at Scripps Clinic in San Diego found that grapefruit may trigger weight loss by lowering insulin levels, an excess of which is linked to weight gain. Effect of grapefruits on weight loss was confirmed in humans. An early study by the same researchers confirmed that eating grapefruit or drinking juice with meal can help the obese lose weight.

Even the interaction of grapefruit juice with drugs, a bad trait for grapefruit, has been explored. Researchers at Texas A&M Citrus Center studied the interaction between grapefruit compounds and drugs in hopes that this interaction can be taken advantage of to increase bioavailability of drugs in humans.

These studies were presented in the American Chemical Society Annual Meeting being held in Pennsylvania during Aug. 22 through 26.

Natural Supplements for Lowering High Cholesterol
Nearly 107 million Americans have total cholesterol of 200 mg/dL or higher, a level at which cardiovascular risk begins to rise.

There are many prescription drugs available for lowering cholesterol such as Lipitor, Mevacor, and Zocor. Research has shown that natural supplements may be as effective as these drugs. These supplements include:

Niacinimide- Doctors often recommend Niacinimide after placing patients on prescription drugs, but this vitamin may lower LDL cholesterol by itself. *Niacin (nicotinic acid) comes in prescription form and as "dietary supplements."
IMPORTANT NOTE: If your doctor has prescribed Niacin (nicotinic acid) in prescription form dietary supplement niacin must not be used as a substitute for prescription niacin. It should not be used for lowering cholesterol because of potential very serious side effects.

Red Yeast Rice- Contains a naturally occurring form of lovastatin and can reduce total and LDL cholesterol.

Turmeric- Studies have shown that turmeric by itself can lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol.

Guggul- Can reduce atherosclerotic plaque while lowering LDL cholesterol. It also supports overall circulatory health.
These supplements have been shown to lower cholesterol and can be used in conjunction with any prescription medications or by themselves. A doctors approval would be recommended if you are currently taking medication.

Heart Friendly Foods
By P. Mehta

Heart disease results when plaque builds up inside the arterial walls, which causes a partial or complete obstruction of blood flow. This reduces flow of blood to heart and may result in angina. Angina is a sensation of discomfort, pain, burning or pressure, generally felt in the chest area.

Angina may be the first indication of heart disease. But many people with heart disease often get no warning signals, until they suffer a full heart attack. Chest pain should not been ignored, even when it is not permanent.

During a heart attack, the supply of oxygen to heart is cut off, resulting in tissue death for a part of the heart muscle.

There are certain foods that lower cholesterol and thus the risk of heart disease. The following heart friendly foods are important for the health of your heart.

Apples: Drinking 12 ounces of apple juice or eating two whole apples a day is beneficial. Research has shown that phytochemicals in apples could help cut the risk of death from heart disease or stroke in half.

Onions: Eating half a raw onion a day raises HDL (good) cholesterol by an average of 25 percent in most people.

Legumes/Beans: One serving of dried beans/legumes a day can reduce cholesterol by up to 10%. The fiber and other compounds present in legumes and beans can lower cholesterol, blood clotting and improve blood-vessel function. These are also a great source of folate, which keeps homocysteine levels (an indicator of heart trouble), in check.

Oats: Eating about one-cup of cooked oatmeal a day significantly decreases blood cholesterol levels. Oats contain beta-glucans, a soluble fibe that is responsible for cholesterol reduction.

Walnuts: Eating walnuts can reduce your total cholesterol level by 12% and LDL cholesterol level by 16%. Walnuts contain a type of fat called linolenic acid, which lowers cholesterol and prevents blood clots.

Olive Oil, Canola Oil: Of all cooking oils, olive oil contains the largest proportion (77%) of monounsaturated fat and has powerful antioxidants, which lowers LDL cholesterol without affecting HDL levels.
