Drugs That Can Worsen Tinnitus
An ototoxic drug is one that has the side effect of creating a hearing loss or ringing in the ears. Many of these drugs can be avoided or, at least if you know of the dangers, precautions can be made during your consumption of them. Not all of the drugs can cause permanent damage. Many times after the drugs are discontinued your hearing will return or the ringing will stop, but not always. Drugs that can worsen tinnitus include NSAIDS like Motrin and Naproxen are the largest culprits along with high dose aspirin which is the maximum required per day dose, loop inhibiting diuretics, certain antibiotics, and some chemotherapy drugs. Antimalarial drugs like Quinine, Chloroquine, and Amodiaquine among others, birth control pills, and even marijuana. Other lifestyle choices like smoking, high caffeine use, alcohol and certain spices especially on the hotter side of the spectrum like chili has also been shown to worsen tinnitus. MSG a food additive can also have an effect on tinnitus and hearing. Glutamate is used by the hair cells in the ear as a neurotransmitter. If the hair cells are damaged there will be ringing or hearing damage. According to Barry Keate from his Tinnitus blog article entitled, “Food-borne Neurotoxins and Tinnitus, Part 2: Monosodium Glutamate” Excitotoxins, such as MSG and Aspartame, have been linked to a whole group of degenerative brain diseases in children and adults, especially the very young and the elderly. These diseases include ADD and ADHD, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, ALS, (Lou Gehrig’s disease), as well as several more rare disorders of the nervous system. Tinnitus is a degenerative neurological condition that is affected by excitotoxins. There are several medicines available to help inner ear problems like tinnitus but most of them affect the entire body such as diuretics which cause a major reduction of fluid in the entire body and an insignificant decrease in the inner ear where the origin of problem is. The safest ways to get help from this very annoying condition are holistic treatments such as Ginkgo biloba and zinc which have shown to reduce tinnitus ringing in several clinical studies. Look for a product that contains Maidenhair tree better known as Ginkgo biloba, rosemary and zinc, avoid loud noises, and choose foods and medications carefully. If you are taking prescription anticoagulants (Coumadin, Plavix) consult your physician before using Ginkgo biloba as it increases circulation and acts as anticoagulant. |
